Employee stories

Cathrin Logue, Solicitor, Commercial Property, Glasgow (Trainee 2006-2008)

Cathrin Logue"Working at Semple Fraser quickly teaches you the value of being part of a large team. Throughout my traineeship, and as a newly qualified solicitor I have consistently had the opportunity to learn from and work with highly experienced and extremely efficient lawyers.

I have been extended the correlating opportunity to refine my skills and contribute effectively to an ever-expanding firm, with the chance to work in both English and Scottish transactions. This has exposed me to a vast number of clients which makes it easier to appreciate the wider commercial context of any deal, along with meeting some fantastic people on the way."

Stuart Turner - Trainee Solicitor Commercial Property - Edinburgh

Stuart Turner"From very early on I have been given the responsibility necessary to learn how to be a lawyer while simultaneously being sufficiently supported to have the opportunity to be a trainee – I have worked as part of my team on everything from straightforward day-to-day transactions up to high value, complex deals, while the mentor system allows for both continuous on the job training and the chance to ask experienced colleagues lots of questions!

The specialised traineeship has the obvious advantage that on qualification I will effectively have 18 months' more experience in my chosen field than the vast majority of other NQ's.

A more immediate advantage for me has been that of continuity – working in the same team and in the same field means that I feel like I have been afforded the time and the space to become comfortable in my role as a fee earner.

This continuity also has the upshot that as my experience in this area grows, so does my insight into the commercial context of the firm’s work, and my confidence in dealing with clients, other lawyers, and more complicated and demanding tasks.

Semple Fraser also has a strong social side – there are many nights out (both organized and impromptu) along with the more formal summer day out and commercial property team annual bash. Everyone is on first name terms, and there is a genuine openness from Partner level down."

Josephine Armstrong, Solicitor, Environment, Semple Fraser Glasgow (Trainee 2OO3-2OO5)

jva.jpg"At Semple Fraser, I have been provided with a unique opportunity in my chosen specialised area of environmental law. From day one, within a friendly and ever supportive department, I've been made to feel an integral part of the team and given an excellent opportunity to delve into this diverse area of the law."
